I designed this digital message entry device (DMED)  for the military, circa. 1962
This is a mockup of the device that was designed to be used by military personnel to expedite sending messages quickly and accurately in adverse situations.  For example, a forward spotter wearing artic gloves near the north pole could dial up a form corresponding to the situation he observes.  Then the form would be filled out in a few minutes using the dials and pushbuttons.  The message would then be transmitted to his headquarters in milliseconds by hitting the 'T'ransmit key.
